🔢Adjective Order
Hello to all our hard-working candidates! If you have ever felt like your English sentences sound a bit “off” when you use more than one description, don’t worry. It’s a common hurdle for many learners.
In English, we follow a very specific rule. We don’t just throw adjectives together in any order; there is a natural sequence that native speakers use instinctively.
🧪 The Secret Formula: NOSASCOMP
To remember the order, many students use the acronym NOSASCOMP. While it sounds like a strange planet, it is actually your best friend for the exam!
Here is the breakdown of the order you should follow:
-
N (Number): One, several, many
-
O (Opinion): Beautiful, ugly, difficult, delicious.
-
S (Size): Big, tiny, enormous
-
A (Age): Old, new, ancient, young
-
S (Shape): Round, square, long
-
C (Colour): Red, blue, yellowish
-
O (Origin): British, Italian, lunar
-
M (Material): Wooden, metal, plastic
-
P (Purpose): What is it for? (e.g., a sleeping bag, walking boots)
🤔 Why does it matter?
If you say “a plastic big red bowl,” a native speaker will understand you, but it will sound “clunky.” To sound natural and score high marks in your speaking or writing assessments, you should say:
“A big (size) red (colour) plastic (material) bowl.”
💡 Top Tips for the Exam
-
Don’t overdo it: In real life and in exams, we rarely use more than three adjectives together. Using four or five can make your writing feel heavy and unnatural.
-
Commas: If the adjectives are from different categories (like size and colour), you don’t usually need a comma.
-
Correct: “A big black dog.”
-
Incorrect: “A big, black dog.”
-
-
The “Opinion” Rule: If you remember nothing else, remember that Opinion always comes before Fact. If you think a car is “cool” and “German,” it is always a “cool German car.” 🏎️🇩🇪
